Joseph Drapell found a place of mystical power in Georgian Bay, with the people of the First Nations living nearby. It was island B-109, where the artist spent every summer from 1970. The view of the infinite horizon slowly filtered into his abstraction. The late art critic, Dr. Ken Carpenter, wrote that Drapell may have complemented the legacy of the Group of Seven by his new painting vision. The ten majestic works from this period are being discovered in this exhibition at the modern.toronto, some 100 years later.

After Sunset, 1987, 35 x 144 inches, a/c
