Steelcase Art Projects (SAP) is pleased to present Turn Signal / Next Exit, an exhibition by Toronto-based artist Janine Miedzik.

Janine Miedzik’s background as a fine art painter has been shaped by her experience working as a window dresser, prop builder, set dresser, and house painter. Her approach draws directly from these trades, paying close attention to the often-unseen supports within these environments—scrims, signage, drop cloths, and tarp covers found across job sites, retail displays, and film sets.

Over the past several years, Miedzik’s practice has moved fluidly between large-scale public works and more intimate formats, exploring tensions between permanence and temporality. Using materials sourced from construction sites—sign vinyl, gaffer tape, duct tape, and cinefoil—she creates bold compositions. These surface treatments form the basis of her shapeshifting artworks characterized by vivid colours that punctuate the urban landscape.

Turn Signal, the exhibition’s signature installation, spans 40 by 30 feet and defines its own environment, overflowing within a cul-de-sac at the end of an unoccupied warehouse. Works such as Mexico City and Chevron take the form of oversized traffic signs, painted on commercial drop sheets and mounted onto foam and plywood supports.

Inspired by transitory urban spaces, her work isolates and recontextualizes graphic icons and wayfinding systems. Removed from their functional purpose, these visual languages shift from tools of navigation to abstract fields of perception.

The installation reflects Industrial Arts’ desire to highlight materials and processes through artworks that employ the language of the industrial realm. Rain or shine, join us for the launch on Saturday, June 6 at 1pm. The event is free and all are welcome.
