In Conversation: Nehal El-Hadi and Bridget Harvey
Join DesignTO Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at 12pm EDT, for the fifth ‘In Conversation’ series event with writer and researcher Nehal El-Hadi and artist and educator Bridget Harvey. Nehal and Bridget will discuss how they see the world through objects, focusing on the craft and ethics of repair. Their discussion on repair will span many scales, from the object to the world at large, touching on environmental accountability, new economies and community.
Nehal El-Hadi is a writer, researcher and editor whose work explores the intersections of and interactions between the body, place, and technology. A science and environmental journalist by trade, she completed a PhD in Planning at the University of Toronto, where she studied the relationships between virtual and material public urban spaces. She is currently based in Toronto, where she is the Editor-in-Chief of Studio Magazine, a biannual publication dedicated to contemporary Canadian craft and design, and the Science + Technology Editor at The Conversation Canada, an academic news site.
Bridget Harvey uses making to ask critical questions, generating new understanding and adding meaning through craft. She asks what we make, how we make it, and why that matters. She examines ideas like pace, repetition, playfulness and repair through her studio practice. Using found objects and materials like fired ceramics, wood, and textiles, she works interdisciplinarily to make provocative collectable artefacts. Bridget also does practice-based research, curates exhibitions, gives workshops and talks, and writes.
‘In Conversation’ Series
Spotlighting designers from Canada and the UK, DesignTO in partnership with University of the Arts London (UAL) and OCAD University presents a new online series in 2021 called ‘In Conversation’. As the title suggests, faculty, students and alumni from UAL and OCAD will be in conversation with each other and industry experts to discuss contemporary issues, research and creation in design.
The ongoing collaboration between UAL and OCAD comes out of dialogue between the two universities, working on common areas of interest such as decolonization and sustainability. Joining UAL and OCAD to present ‘In Conversation’, DesignTO is a Toronto-based non-profit arts organization that produces Canada’s leading and largest annual design festival, showcasing multidisciplinary ways of making and thinking.
