Enjoy an extraordinary evening exploring the intersection of art, light, technology, and cultural storytelling at the DMZ Sandbox, located in the Student Learning Centre (SLC) at TMU, on February 14, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. This engaging artist talk brings together innovative creators whose works are transforming public spaces into immersive experiences of light and connection.

Featured artists Matt Jones, Jordan Shaw and Nyle Miigizi Johnston, and Sandrine Thériault, will share their insights into the creation of their remarkable installations that are part of ILLUMINITE, currently taking place in ​the heart ​of downtown Toronto.


Crosshatch by Jordan Shaw

Experience the magic of interactive light art through Shaw’s innovative installation that invites direct participation. Learn how this Toronto-based artist and creative technologist combines kinetic elements with experiential lighting to create a dynamic environment that responds to visitor interactions. Shaw will discuss how Crosshatch transforms individual actions into collective experiences, demonstrating the powerful relationship between technology and human connection.


Fireside Storytelling by Nyle Miigizi Johnston

Discover the profound cultural significance behind Johnston’s latest public sculpture, which beautifully merges traditional storytelling with contemporary design. Johnston, whose spirit name Wiishkoonseh Miigizi’enh represents the Whistling White-Headed Eagle, will share how this installation honours Indigenous traditions while creating a modern gathering space illuminated by responsive LED technology.


Celestia by kleis

Explore the mythological inspiration and technical innovation behind Celestia by kleis, an enchanting installation at Sankofa Square. Sandrine Thériault, a distinguished designer with a Master’s in Event Design from UQAM, will discuss how this work transforms public space into an interactive celestial experience. Through her vision as artistic director, the installation weaves together poetry, sound, and light in a narrative inspired by the Pleiades myth. Drawing from a decade of expertise in creating participatory environments, Sandrine crafts spaces that both engage and inspire.


Pulse by MattCreative

Pulse is an immersive LED installation that explores hidden networks connecting humans and nature, drawing inspiration from underground tree root systems. Matthew Jones, a multimedia artist from Waterloo who specializes in large-scale LED installations, draws on 15 years of digital design experience to create groundbreaking public art. Learn how this installation uses vibrant visualizations and interactive elements to respond to visitor presence, creating a mesmerizing light display that unveils nature’s invisible connections.
