أَمَلَ ਉਮੀਦ امید आशा Hope

Guest-curated by Sandeep Johal
October 28th, 2022 to February 5th, 2023

Two Rivers Gallery is excited to introduce أَمَلَ ਉਮੀਦ امید आशा Hope, a group exhibition showcasing work from artists based in Canada who are culturally connected to South Asia. The exhibition includes work by seven artists: Aman Aheer, Minahil Bhukari, Farheen Haq, Keerat Kaur, Sunroop Kaur, Sara Khan, and Mustaali Raj. The artworks created by these contemporary artists are connected by a common consideration of hope and explore this theme through reflections on identity and celebration of South Asian cultures. This exhibition will be on display from October 28th, 2022 to February 5th, 2023.

This exhibition opens during the South Asian holiday of Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over dark and hope over despair, a theme which is also at the core of this exhibition. These artworks challenge our ideas of hope and ask us to examine what it means to each of us, individually and collectively, and how it is informed by culture and community. The artworks range from delicate floor-to-ceiling embroidery to machine-carved wooden sculpture and watercolour paintings adorned with gold leaf. From traditional portraiture to ceramic sculptures and video, each work is built around individual stories and unique perspectives on what it means to dream of something brighter and build as a community.

Sandeep Johal, a visual artist based in Vancouver, has lent her perspective and expertise as the Guest Curator of this exhibition. Johal describes أَمَلَ ਉਮੀਦ امید आशा Hope. Hope as “different manifestations of hope, each rooted in individual identities and stories, connected to complex pasts and ancestral lineages, and exploring present day anxieties and fears, while simultaneously dreaming up new ways of building the future.” Two Rivers Gallery is grateful to share this celebration of South Asian cultures with the community of Northern British Columbia.
