Hanji: A Thousand Years of Korean Paper Art – Hanji Meets Canada is a landmark exhibition presented in Toronto and Ottawa in celebration of Asian Heritage Month. As the first Hanji touring exhibition in Canada, it introduces audiences to the enduring legacy and contemporary vitality of Korea’s traditional handmade paper.
The exhibition features seven highly accomplished Korean Hanji artists whose international reputations reflect both artistic excellence and academic leadership. Many are active professors and lecturers at leading universities, recipients of prestigious national art awards, and participants in numerous global exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and China. Their works span installation, sculpture, painting, and experimental forms that bridge tradition and innovation.
The opening reception will include an artist talk, a documentary screening on the history and making of Hanji, and a live performance of traditional Korean music, offering an immersive cultural experience. Artist-led workshops will further invite Canadian participants to explore Hanji techniques and foster meaningful exchange.
This exhibition is organized by OIS Art of Canada, a cultural organization dedicated to promoting artistic exchange between Korea and Canada through exhibitions, collaborations, and public programming.
Renowned for its durability and sustainability, Hanji continues to evolve as a contemporary medium of global relevance, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience both its heritage and future.
