German humour isn’t typically centre stage, but when filmmakers from Hamburg to Berlin dive into comedy, things get wonderfully wild, weird, and unforgettable as three international hit films, each a category onto themselves, prove.

In Wolfgang Becker’s classic Good Bye, Lenin!, a young Daniel Brühl strives to recreate a vanished East Berlin for his ailing mother. Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann features almost-Oscar winner Sandra Hüller as a beleaguered consultant trailed by her oddball father and a creature named Kukeri. And in I’m Your Man, director Maria Schrader orchestrates a smart and tender AI robo-romance with Maren Eggert, Dan Stevens, and Sandra Hüller.

In 1990, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Alex (Daniel Brühl) tries to protect his fragile mother from a potentially fatal shock after a long coma, doing everything possible to keep her from learning that her beloved East Germany has disappeared.

“An ingenious little idea that is funny, moving and—gasp!—even makes you think.“ – Empire Magazine, who ranked the film among The 100 Best Films of World Cinema
