Frantz Brent-Harris
Afrophilia
On view until March 29, 2026
Central Branch, Glass Case Gallery
When artist Frantz Brent-Harris saw how today’s Black youth are activating an era of self-acceptance, he was inspired to create Afrophilia. Traditionally, bust sculptures have highlighted Eurocentric figures from a narrow perspective—they have lacked diversity in gender, race and class. Brent-Harris unapologetically reimagines this tradition with portrayals of Black people. He’s created powerful representations that honor diverse beauty and stand in defiance of historical notions of heroism.
About the Artist
Frantz Brent-Harris is a Jamaican-born, Toronto-based artist whose figurative work explores identity and perception. His work confronts the tensions of double-consciousness and cognitive dissonance experienced by Black, African, and Caribbean communities whose lives are too often ignored or invisible.
