To commemorate the 79th anniversary of Viola Desmond’s historic stand against racial segregation on November 8, 1946, TIFF proudly presents a 35mm screening of Bill Duke’s beloved 1993 sequel to Sister Act, co-curated by “Canada’s Queen of R&B Soul” Jully Black. Before the screening, Black will join us for an onstage conversation about the film’s enduring message of the power of community through music, how she found her voice through church choir and Lauryn Hill’s Rita, and how she is using her platform to advance the education of young women.

TIFF Wavelengths Presents is pleased to host the Toronto Premiere of Nicolas Graux and Trương Minh Quý’s Hair, Paper, Water…, winner of this year’s Golden Leopard – Filmmakers of the Present at Locarno. Shot on a vintage Bolex camera, the visually rich and sonically immersive documentary follows matriarch Cao Thị Hậu—a member of the cave-dwelling Rục ethnic minority—as she maintains the language and practices of her people in light of the homogenizing forces of urbanization and economic development in central Vietnam.

Marking the 40th anniversary of Studio Ghibli, TIFF Community Impact is proud to collaborate with Skills for Change to co-present a new 4K restoration of Hayao Miyazaki’s eco-masterpiece Princess Mononoke. Before the screening, representatives from Skills for Change’s Youth Climate Action Initiative (YCAI) will join us for an onstage conversation about mobilizing youth as leaders in building sustainable futures.
Skills for Change works with newcomers and underserved communities to provide holistic solutions that bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for success in Canada. The YCAI program empowers youth from diverse backgrounds to be active drivers of sustainability in their communities.

Come on a jolly holiday and celebrate the timeless magic of Julie Andrews with a singalong screening of Mary Poppins, hosted by comedian Martha Chaves! In her film debut, Andrews is “practically perfect” as the titular travelling nanny in this crowd-pleasing movie musical.
This event will feature warm-up activities, props, and onscreen lyrics so that the whole audience can sing, cheer, and quote along. Prepare to be blown away (grab your magical umbrella!) by an original soundtrack chock full of iconic songs like “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” with glorious visuals that mix painted London background scenes, rich animated landscapes, and a memorable procession of furry friends.
Have your tap shoes at the ready and dance away your troubles with an undeniably charming cast of characters, including the precocious Banks children and jack-of-all-trades Bert, played by Dick Van Dyke, who will be turning 100 this December!

Calling all dreamers—join us for a night of dancing, singing, and wonder with a special screening of The Greatest Showman, hosted by comedian/ringleader Martha Chaves!
Dust off your top hat for a participatory event featuring the 2017 film that tells a fantastical version of P.T. Barnum’s life and his world-famous Barnum & Bailey Circus, with magnetic performances by musical superstars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Zendaya. An instant classic popularized for its heartfelt messages of freedom and self-acceptance, The Greatest Showman continues to inspire “a million dreams” and the courage to shine.
This event will feature warm-up activities, props, and onscreen lyrics so the whole audience can perform chart-topping hits such as “This Is Me” and “Rewrite the Stars.” Ladies and gents, this is the moment you’ve waited for—sing your heart out at TIFF Lightbox this December!
Sing Along: The Lion King

Sharpen your claws, practice your roar, and “be prepared” for a truly wild screening of the 1994 Disney smash hit The Lion King. This singalong event will be hosted by actor Salvatore Antonio, following his standout performance as Scar in the Toronto production of the live musical of the same name.
Dress up as your favourite animal and join Simba as he moves through the “circle of life” and fights to reclaim his throne from his usurping uncle Scar. If this is your first time visiting the Pride Lands, “Hakuna Matata” (it means no worries), this event will feature warm-up activities, props, and onscreen lyrics so the whole audience can sing along. The Academy Award–winning soundtrack features original songs by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a moving score by Hans Zimmer, blending African choral and percussive elements with orchestral, rock, and pop influences.
