To honour Chinatowns as “a place of home & identity” for the past, present, and going forward. Stories of the people who created the place—those who have passed and some still present. Not the usual suspects you hear of all the time, but ordinary people who led lives that shaped the place we call home.

Carol Mark, East Chinatown Shopping at Sam’s

Curated by Carol Mark, an artist, photographer, and filmmaker who grew up in The Ward, Toronto’s first Chinatown, moved to Riverdale’s Broadview-Gerrard Chinatown, and has now settled into the recently discovered early sister Chinatown, Wilkie Block 1912.

Relics of Love and War, Documentary by Keith Lock
September 27, 2026, 2–5pm | Paid Ticketed Event

Chinese Canadian filmmaker Keith Lock recounts how his mother married his father in Australia while he was training with other Chinese Canadian volunteers for the top secret suicide mission, Operation Oblivion. The story is set during WWII when Chinese Canadians could not vote, swim in pools, or hire white women for their businesses.

The Art Of Paper: Workshop
September 20, 2026, 1–3pm

Jenny Zhang will present a paper collage workshop exploring handmade paper traditions East and West. Participants learn how to fold paper fortune cookies inspired by Chinese restaurant traditions and collage.

The Architecture of Chinatown History Past and Present: Artist Talk
September 26, 2026, 1–3pm

Painter Eric Fong explores the architectural relationship between Toisanese villages in Guangdong, China, and the development of North American Chinatowns.

Nuit Blanche 2026: Tomorrow’s Memories
City of Toronto Independent Projects
October 3, 2026, 7pm – 7am

As witnesses, step into a multimedia exhibition of forgotten Toronto histories, hidden Chinatown stories, musicians, Lion Dancers at 183 Gallery 7pm to midnight; from midnight to 7am, peephole window projections connecting memory, culture, and community across generations. Curated by Carol Mark.

This project is supported by the Moss Park Pharmacy and the love of tea.

183 Gallery is home to the Amazing Moss Park Art Collective. The gallery is a community focused on visual art, music, photography, and film. Their mandate is creating art for social change.

The gallery has pop ups, workshops, and events. Space is also available for rentals.
