Every Heart Can Grow Bigger: Libby Hague | Controlled Chaos: Abstract Painting in Canada

Every Heart Can Grow Bigger: Libby Hague

May 24 – October 6, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, May 24th 7 – 9 PM

Libby Hague, Every Heart Can Grow Bigger (installation detail), 2019, woodblock prints and paint on paper, dimensions variable.

In this site-specific immersive woodcut installation, Libby Hague, one of Canada’s most recognized print-based installation artists, creates an imaginary environment that examines the complexity of female relationships in an anxious, precarious, yet inter-connected world. Her work is framed around a narrative of escape and rescue. The women depicted in this work are placed in a state of migration navigating the dangers associated with seeking a better life. Myths of self-reliance are shattered, despite obvious determination. It is through friendship, collaboration and the forming of social bonds that we survive.

“… our best selves are social; the sophistication of our world is almost unfathomably interdependent. We need others. We want our lives to have a purpose, a meaning beyond survival. We want to belong. The meaning offered here is friendship. Our belligerent world swirls with anger, resentment and prejudice. Although it’s hard to believe hope is possible any more, every heart can grow bigger. We have to try.”

Creation and re-creation are central elements of Hague’s practice. Elements are repeated and repurposed in installations that grow organically creating a co-created narrative between Hague and her audience.

Join us this summer for a Relief Printing Workshop and Artist Talk with Libby Hague.
