David Currie: Patterns That Aren’t
October 24 – November 18, 2026
Opening Reception: October 25, 1 – 3pm
Cedar Ridge Creative Centre, Scarborough
This exhibition presents an exceptional opportunity for David Currie to showcase recent work based on compelling compositional arrangements derived from mathematical formulas using aperiodic monotiles.
On display are 21 engaging mixed-medium images (varying in size up to 2 metres square), produced on high-quality, intricately cut paper. These artworks are highly detailed and exquisitely presented using ultra-modern materials.

David Currie’s artistic journey began in the early 1970s in the Fine Art Program at HB Beal (London, Ontario, under Herbert Ariss) and followed by several semesters in the Studio Program at the Banff Centre (1978/79, under Takao Tanabe). Combined, these experiences provided a unique creative foundation.
However, unanswered questions regarding relevance and purpose ultimately altered the direction of David’s life. While his personal interests in art continued, the 1980s brought opportunities for growth beyond the challenges of pursuing life as an artist.
For instance, he trained as a Registered Nurse and eventually worked in a neurosurgical operating room. Subsequently, he spent several years in Hong Kong, earned an MBA, and gained corporate experience. Finally, David worked in Shenzhen, China, in various capacities as a company trainer, coach, and teacher.

Around 2016, exploring ideas related to patterns that enhance visual engagement started drawing David back to art.
“It felt like I was attempting to catch the last train back to my creative origins.”
As the ideas solidified, he began to view creativity and audience engagement as synonymous.
Now, in late 2026, David is delighted to have an opportunity to share highlights of his artistic output.
The artwork in this show provides a fresh and appealing visual feel that intends to engage through a unique combination of skill, technique, and visual science.
