The Gardiner Museum celebrates the art of ceramics and engages local and international audiences by promoting understanding of the long history of people crafting in clay. Through the display of its permanent collections and special exhibitions, as well as through studio education, programs that engage diverse communities, and major contributions to scholarship, the Gardiner champions ceramics. The Gardiner Museum is among the few museums in the world focused on ceramics, and is one of the most important specialty museums internationally.

Under the supervision of the Education Manager, the Ceramics Instructor will lead the Sessional Classes for adults and/or children for the Winter and Spring 2022 Terms. Preference will be given to those who can show an understanding of current trends in contemporary art. Successful candidates may be eligible to teach additional classes in 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement lesson plans for adult/youth/kids sessional courses
  • Provide a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for all participants
  • Ensuring student success and satisfaction in with class objectives
  • Responsible for clean-up and general maintenance of studios after classes
  • Coordinate with Studio Technician for ceramic firing and glazing
  • Follow all Museum guidelines and policies, and provide quality customer service and instruction to students

Minimum Requirements:

  • Post-secondary diploma, degree or equivalent in ceramics or other relevant areas
  • 3-4 years demonstrated expert knowledge and experience working with ceramics
  • Knowledge of Hand-building clay, wheel throwing, using slab roller
  • 3-4 years of experience teaching ceramics courses
  • Excellent organization, communication, and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of languages other than English, and especially French, an asset
  • Working knowledge of and experience in an art studio, including health and safety practices
