Camille Turner: Afronautic Research Lab
October 1 – 26, 2024
The Department of Visual Arts presents Camille Turner as Walker Cultural Leader to the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Brock University.
Camille Turner is an artist/scholar whose work combines Afrofuturism and historical research. She is a Provost’s postdoctoral fellow at University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, and her award-winning artworks are held in collections across Canada and internationally. Her most recent explorations confront Canada’s entanglement with the transatlantic trade in Africans, approaching colonial archives from the point of view of a liberated future.
Turner brings her Afronautic methodology to the Visual Arts Gallery with an exhibition, Afronautic Research Lab from October 1 – 26, 2024. This innovative social practice project will involve the local community offering an immersive art experience that centralizes Blackness to expose silenced histories and explore potential futures.
Join us for a public lecture on Thursday, October 3 from 4:30 – 6:00pm in Studio C (MWS 251), followed by the opening reception on Thursday, October 3 from 6 – 8pm and a workshop on Saturday, October 5 from 1:00 – 2:30pm in the Visual Arts Gallery.
All events take place at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.
These events are part of the Walker Cultural Leader Series presented by the Department of Visual Arts, Brock University. Admission is free.
