The prestigious Glenfiddich Artists in Residence program is officially accepting Canadian applicants for the 2023 residency program in Dufftown, Scotland

Glenfiddich® Single Malt Whisky invites artists living and working in Canada to enter the internationally acclaimed competition for the prestigious 2023 Glenfiddich® Artists in Residence Prize. The Canadian winner will be one of eight artists worldwide to be awarded the coveted prize to live and work at the historic Glenfiddich Distillery. The experience provides an opportunity unlike any other, encouraging artists to foster cross-disciplinary ideas, form lasting friendships and take inspiration from the picturesque and vibrant setting.

One of the most renowned artist residencies in the world, the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence program is a three-month summer residency at the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland. The 17th annual residency prize will award one Canadian artist with a salary for three months, as well as full travel and accommodation. The prize also includes a generous production budget, allowing artists to produce an ambitious new body of work.

“Each year, this program provides a unique opportunity to Canadian artists to collaborate and create in the scenic Scottish Highlands,” says Program Curator Andy Fairgrieve, who has been with the program since its inception. “We are joined by a new group of passionate artists from around the world annually, and we are profoundly impressed by the works they create at the idyllic Glenfiddich distillery.”

The Artists in Residence Program is open to Canadian artists who live and work in Canada. Applicants complete a five-part application to be considered, including a project proposal, a current CV, a short artist statement, 5 to 15 images or a three-minute video highlighting their artistic method, as well as a questionnaire provided by Glenfiddich. Completed applications must be submitted by January 31st, 2023, at 11:59 pm, EST.

Each year the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program receives over 200 applications, from across the country. From these, a distinguished jury of artists and curators produces a list of the ten most promising applications, from which Fairgrieve selects the winner. This years jury includes David Diviney, Stefan Hancherow, Ivan Jurakic, Michelle Jacques, Michelle Schultz, and Collin Zipp.

Globally, the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program has hosted over a hundred artists from countries such as: Australia, Chile, China, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland, Scotland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, the UK, the US, and Canada since its inception in 2002.

Past winners from Canada include Daniel Barrow, Lorna Bauer, Lee Henderson, Eleanor King, Dean Baldwin Lew, Myfanwy Macleod, Vanessa Maltese, Damian Moppett, Annie Pootoogook, Jon Sasaki, and Rhonda Weppler & Trevor Mahovsky, These acclaimed artists produced works in a wide-range of disciplines, including painting, sculpture, sound art, video, photography, performance, and installation.

The Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program is celebrated for the long-term impact it can have on an artist’s practice. Marla Hlady describes her time in Dufftown in 2019 as “extraordinary” and “life-changing”. The impressive new works she produced at Glenfiddich with her partner Christof Migone is reviewed in the current issue of Frieze Magazine.

“My work continues to benefit from the freedom to experiment that this program offered,” notes Vanessa Maltese, the 2018 artist-in-residence. Lee Henderson, from the year prior, remembers “It’s the people that make it truly special. While I was there, the tools and techniques of Dufftown’s workers infused their character into my studio work with a profound and lasting richness.”

The 2023 Artists in Residence program will mark the 22nd global anniversary of the program and the 17th anniversary of the Glenfiddich Artist in Residence program in Canada. Applicant submissions are accepted from December 9th, 2022, until 11:59 pm EST on January 31st, 2023.
