Call to Artists
Davpart Inc., on behalf of 481 Uni Investments Inc., through their public art consultant, Brad Golden + Co, is holding a Two-Stage Competition to select an artist to develop a permanent public artwork as part of their United BLDG project, located at the prominent intersection of the corner of University Avenue and Dundas Street in Downtown Toronto. The project is the tallest heritage façade retention project in North America.
The artwork will be integrated with the glass components of the colonnade lighting (please see attached drawings) and will be based on the theme of “communication”. The selected artwork will recognize the existing, historic, restored carvings on site, designed by Elizabeth Winnifred Wood and carved by Louis Temporale, as well as the previous use of the building as the McLean Hunter Publishing’s original headquarters. Artists are encouraged to conduct their own research to familiarize themselves with the site.
The budget for the completed and installed artwork, not including artist fees, is $120,000 (plus HST). Davpart Inc. will pay for costs related to the production and installation of the artwork up to $120,000. The selected artist will be paid a fee of $50,000 to develop their artwork, to produce any digital files required to print their work onto glass and to oversee printing, production and installation of their work.
Submissions will be reviewed by an independent selection committee convened for this project who will create a list of prequalified proponents. From this prequalified list, the building developer will select of up to seven (7) artists to prepare site-specific design proposals for the designated art site. A Request for Proposals, including all relevant drawings and information will be issued to shortlisted artists. Shortlisted artists will be paid a $2,500 honourarium (plus HST, if applicable) to create an artwork proposal which they will present to the competition jury. The competition jury will be comprised of the selection committee plus two representatives of the building developer.
Shortlisted artists will be issued a detailed RFP, with complete information about the project. Artist presentations, via teleconference, will take place in the Summer of 2021, specific time and date to be determined.

Interested Canadian artists are invited to submit the following materials for consideration by the competition jury. Indigenous artists and artists from equity seeking communities are encouraged to submit.
- Resumé and artist statement describing general approach to the site and theme
- 10 images (maximum) of recent, relevant work (artist teams are to submit a maximum of 10 images total). Images should be combined into a single file.
- An annotated image list including the title, date, materials, dimensions and commission amount of each work
Do not submit design proposals as they will not be reviewed.
Digital images must be:
- pdf or jpg, RGB format, no larger than 1 MB per image
- images to be named with the number corresponding to the image list
