John Fleming Award in Decorative Arts Writing

Award Information

The John Fleming Award honours his lasting contribution to Canadian decorative arts scholarship and writing.

This award recognizes an exceptional example of original magazine writing on decorative arts in Canada. Decorative arts are creative works, often of a practical or useful nature, produced by an artist, craftsman, or amateur, which have intrinsic aesthetic and/or historical value. These arts include architectural ornament; ceramics; glass; furniture and furnishings; graphics; metalwork and jewellery; textiles; theatre arts; and interior, industrial, and landscape design.

This $1,000 juried award will be presented annually to the winner at the 2023 Canadian Society of Decorative Arts/Cercle canadien des arts décoratifs (CSDA/CCAD) Symposium and the article published in Ornamentum magazine and website.

Le prix John Fleming honore la contribution durable de John A. Fleming aux connaissances et à la rédaction dans le domaine des arts décoratifs au Canada.

Ce prix récompense un exemple exceptionnel de publication originale dans un magazine sur les arts décoratifs au Canada. Les arts décoratifs sont des œuvres de création, souvent de nature pratique ou utilitaire, réalisées par un ou une artiste, un ou une artisane ou un ou une amatrice, et dotées d’une valeur esthétique et/ou historique intrinsèque. Ces arts comprennent l’ornementation architecturale; la céramique; le verre; le mobilier et l’ameublement; le graphisme; la ferronnerie et la joaillerie; les textiles; les arts de la scène; ainsi que la décoration intérieure, industrielle et paysagère.

Ce prix de 1 000 dollars décerné par un jury sera remis chaque année au lauréat lors du symposium de du Cercle canadien des arts décoratifs/Canadian Society of Decorative Arts (CCAD/CSDA). L’article sera également publié dans le magazine Ornamentum et sur le site Web du CCAD/CSDA.
