Call for Submissions: Burlington Waterfront Sculpture Trail

Burlington Waterfront Sculpture Trail
A Project of the Dan Lawrie International Sculpture Collection

Submission Deadline: July 1st, 2022 5:00pm

The Burlington Waterfront Sculpture Trail will create a 1km long experience linking the Art Gallery of Burlington, Spencer Smith Park and the Downtown Burlington BIA through a series of 12-15 temporary sculptures created by local and regional artists. The 1km trail will be a fully accessible experience, free of barriers and admission for all to engage in.

The project will exhibit works for the period of August through September connecting with Culture Days 2022.

Under the management of Cobalt Connects, the project jury will consist of members from the Art Gallery of Burlington, Downtown BIA and the Dan Lawrie International Sculpture Collection.

All selected works will undergo a technical approval by the City of Burlington Public Art Development Implementation Team (PADIT).

The BWST is seeking completed works that speak to a wide range of audiences and encourage a sense of exploration along the trail. The BWST covers a mix of spaces from formal gallery to kids play structures, treed pockets and Lake Ontario shoreline to downtown streets – providing ample inspiration and juxtaposition for artists to contemplate.

All works must be appropriate for a general public exhibition, and not present an obvious climbing risk or sharp edges.

Working with EXP Engineering and Dan’s Welding, the program is designing a standardized plinth including a pre-formed concrete base and a steel mounting plate that will be tamper-proof. The base will measure 24” x 24” x 30”, weighing approximately 2000 lbs.

Installation of the works will happen over a 2-day period in early August.

Each exhibiting artist will be paid a fee for their exhibition based on the fee schedule below.

Senior: 4 Artists @ $4000
Mid-Career: 5 Artists @ $3000
Emerging: 5 Artists @ $2000

Artists will be responsible to deliver and pick-up their work to Cobalt Connects Hamilton studio. All costs with installation and mounting will be covered by the program.

The BWST Team will also work with our networks to sell works on behalf of the artists at their stated price. Artists will receive 100% of the sale price, less 50% of the rental fee.

DLISC will hold $5M public liability for the project. Artists will be responsible for insuring their work against theft and damage for the duration of the exhibition.
