Call for Speakers: Inaugural Crossing Boundaries Symposium

Mobilizing STEAM to Tackle Climate Change

Call for Speakers: Crossing Boundaries Symposium

May 3 – 4, 2025 at the University of Ottawa

Submission Deadline: February 28, 2025, by 11:59pm EST
Notification of Acceptance: March 15, 2025

The symposium seeks to bring together artists, scientists, engineers, and practitioners working individually or in teams at the intersection of the arts and sciences. Proposals are encouraged from those engaged in fields such as biology with non-human subjects, meteorology, oceanography, and environmental sciences.

This is a Call for Participation!

Are you ready to ignite the power of collaboration to confront the climate crisis? Are you an artist working at the intersection of art and climate science? The Crossing Boundaries Symposium invites visionaries from the arts, sciences, and engineering to step forward with bold ideas that challenge conventions, spark creativity, and drive climate action. This is no ordinary conference—it’s a space where data meets design, where oceanographers and biologists exchange insights with installation artists and performance makers, and where your expertise can fuel a Canadian movement toward environmental resilience.

This symposium is a space where data transforms into art, where oceanographers and meteorologists collaborate with installation artists and performers, and where your work can contribute to shaping a Canadian movement for environmental resilience.

Whether your art draws inspiration from ecosystems or translates scientific research into emotional storytelling, your voice is essential to this urgent conversation. Join us in Ottawa for two transformative days of exploration and collaboration. Together, we’ll examine how multidisciplinary approaches leveraging nature-based solutions can foster a deeper connection to the natural world and inspire meaningful change.

Let’s blur boundaries between disciplines, redefine possibilities, and craft new ways of understanding and acting on climate issues. Will you bring your creative vision to this critical dialogue?

Instructions for Submission:

  • Workshop Proposal (400 words): Explain how your participation will benefit the workshop on Day 2 and identify key issues for discussion.
  • Presentation Abstract (250 words): Indicate your preferred format (e.g., presentation, panel discussion, performance, artwork).

Submit your proposal today and help mobilize STEAM to tackle the climate crisis!

* Selected artists will receive renumeration as per CARFAC fee schedule, and a letter of invitation to support travel grant applications.
