THIRD SHIFT 2024 Call for Proposals: PSYCHE

THIRD SHIFT is an annual festival of public contemporary artworks that takes place in Saint John, New Brunswick. THIRD SHIFT 2024 will take place from August 16 – 18, 2024.

Established in 2015, THIRD SHIFT holds space for new experiences and communal exchange through the exhibition of temporary public art installations, performances, and screenings. For more information about THIRD SHIFT and to see installations from previous festivals, please visit the festival website.

“Psyche” takes on various definitions, often referring to one’s mind underneath the surface. In psychology, the psyche is the centre of thought, feeling, and motivation, which often revolve around mental health and overall psychological well being. From an artistic perspective, the word “psyche” refers to the exploration and representation of the human mind, emotions, and consciousness through various mediums. Artists often delve into the complexities of the psyche, seeking to capture and express the inner thoughts, feelings, and experiences of individuals or collective groups. This exploration can involve the portrayal of dreams, desires, fears, and the subconscious, using symbolism, metaphor, and sensory elements to convey the intricacies of the human mind.

The works selected for THIRD SHIFT: PSYCHE challenge this theme through relevant subjects, from climate change, identity, mental health and wellness, occupying space, and more. Overall, the artistic exploration of the psyche aims to capture the intangible aspects of human consciousness and emotions, offering viewers or audiences a chance to reflect, empathize, and connect with the depths of the human experience.

This theme is intentionally broad and, as such, can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. The proposed projects can take almost any form, from installation to performance. We encourage applicants to interpret the theme creatively. We value experimentation and collaboration.

Third Watch Call for Proposals 2024
Going into its second year, Third Watch is a celebration of digital video works, and a new component of THIRD SHIFT programming. It will take place in Saint John, NB on Saturday, August 17, 2024. Third Watch aims to highlight audio-visual content that is exploratory, challenging, and critical in nature. We encourage work that may not be commercially viable, or not suitable for an installation as a part of THIRD SHIFT. Submissions must be under 15 minutes in length. Content may be narrative, documentary, experimental, or anything in between. If you can project it, we can select it!
