Call for Proposals: Celebrating the strength, activism and hope of queer communities in Canada

Presented by the LGBT Purge Fund and Canadian Heritage

Submission Deadline: April 17, 2026, 4:00 p.m. EDT

In summer 2026, the new 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument, Thunderhead, will be inaugurated in a prominent location in downtown Ottawa. In collaboration with the LGBT Purge Fund, the organization mandated with creating the monument, Canadian Heritage is seeking artworks by Canadian visual artists, photographers, graphic designers, and illustrators that celebrate the strength, activism and hope of diverse queer communities in Canada. Reproductions of these artworks will be displayed in an outdoor exhibition in the Eastern Recreational Pathway Tunnel leading to the monument (under the Portage Bridge and Wellington Street) for a period of up to eighteen months (exact timelines TBC).

Eligibility

This Call for Proposals is open to all Canadian visual artists, photographers, graphic designers and illustrators.

Compensation

Each artist whose artwork is selected will receive a fee of $2,500 for the exhibition of a reproduction of their artwork.

Selection Process

Artworks will be selected by subject matter experts from the fields of arts and design. They will base their decisions on:

• Creativity in responding to the theme of celebrating the strength, activism and hope of diverse queer communities in Canada (30%)
• Artistic quality of the composition (25%)
• Vibrancy and legibility of the image (25%)
• Overall effect on the viewer (20%)

How to Submit

Interested artists must write to monuments@pch.gc.ca with the subject line “Info Package – Eastern Tunnel 2026” to obtain the full application information package.

All proposals must be submitted by Friday, April 17, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. (EDT). Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.

Appel de propositions : Célébration de la force, de l’activisme et de l’espoir des communautés queers

Une présentation du Fonds Purge LGBT et de Patrimoine canadien

Date limite : Le 17 avril 2026 à 16 h (HAE)

À l’été 2026, le nouveau Monument national 2ELGBTQI+, Coup de tonnerre, sera inauguré dans un endroit bien en vue du centre-ville d’Ottawa. Patrimoine canadien, en collaboration avec le Fonds Purge LGBT, l’organisme chargé de créer le monument, est à la recherche d’œuvres de photographes et d’artistes en arts visuels, graphiques et en illustration du Canada qui célèbrent la force, l’activisme et l’espoir des diverses communautés queers au pays. Des reproductions de ces œuvres seront présentées dans le cadre d’une exposition extérieure située dans le tunnel est du sentier récréatif menant au monument (sous le pont du Portage et la rue Wellington) pour une période maximale de 18 mois (l’échéancier exact est à confirmer).

Admissibilité

Cet appel de propositions s’adresse aux artistes en arts visuels, graphiques et en illustration ainsi qu’aux photographes du Canada.

Rémunération

Chaque artiste dont l’œuvre est choisie recevra un cachet de 2 500 $ pour l’exposition d’une reproduction de leur œuvre.

Processus de sélection

Les œuvres d’art seront choisies par des spécialistes en arts et en design. Ces spécialistes fonderont leurs décisions sur :

• La créativité dans le traitement du thème de la célébration de la force, de l’activisme et de l’espoir des diverses communautés queers au Canada (30 %);
• La qualité artistique de la composition (25 %);
• Le dynamisme et la lisibilité de l’image (25 %);
• L’effet global sur le public (20 %).

Comment soumettre

Les artistes souhaitant participer doivent écrire à monuments@pch.gc.ca (avec pour objet « Info – Tunnel de l’est 2026 ») pour obtenir tous les renseignements relatifs à la demande.

Les propositions doivent être soumises par courriel avant le vendredi 17 avril 2026 à 16h00 (HAE). Les soumissions reçues après la date limite ne seront pas prises en compte.
