Call for Artists: The Rooster of Barcelos Project 2021

Applications now open. The City of Toronto is seeking submissions for The Rooster of Barcelos Project in conjunction with the Little Portugal on Dundas BIA, StreetARToronto; the Office of Deputy Mayor, Ana Bailao and The Consulate General of Portugal in Toronto. The application is open to individual Artists, Artist Collectives, and not-for-profit or charitable organizations operating in the city of Toronto.

Background:
The Rooster of Barcelos Project will be located in Little Portugal At Dundas West & Lakeview Ave (1212 Dundas St. W, at the Lakeview Ave. Parkette). A rooster statue has been gifted by the Municipality of Barcelos, Portugal to the City of Toronto to be designed, painted and displayed in Little Portugal, Toronto. This concrete statue (2.8 m. X 1.9 m.) is a blank canvas to be re-imagined by an Artist according to one or both of the guiding themes outlined below.

The Barcelos Rooster, commonly called the Portuguese Rooster, is said to be the embodiment of the Portuguese love of life. It is an unofficial symbol of Portugal found throughout Portugal in town squares, art work and souvenir trinkets. The Rooster stands for pride, hope, a new day, fertility, resurrection and as well as other cultural meanings. In this call, the meaning and symbology of the rooster will be explored in two main ideas or guiding themes:

1. The universal meaning of the rooster as a symbol of the sun.
2. The historical legend of the “Galo de Barcelos” or the Barcelos Rooster.
Submissions can respond to one or both themes.

This Artist Call is Stage 1 of a Two-Stage selection process.
