Call for Expressions of Interest: Assembly Park Outdoor Gallery, Vaughan

Aerial view, Assembly Park Outdoor Gallery Program site, Quadreal Property Group.

Artists are invited to submit expressions of interest for inclusion in the Assembly Park Outdoor Gallery Program, a public art program for QuadReal Property Group in Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

Assembly Park
QuadReal Property Group is undertaking a comprehensive master-planning program to redevelop an 80-acre site within the southeast district of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre into an innovative community known as Assembly Park. This development project is active on many fronts, with long-term visioning of the mixed-use Master Plan community, active construction sites continuously shaping the site, and ongoing community engagement activities within their activation spaces.

The Outdoor Gallery Program will be installed on the exterior surfaces of a series of shipping containers that define The Gardens at Assembly Park. The Gardens are a temporary park space consisting of 1.47 acres of open space, walkways, planting beds, community gardens, and a dozen of aqua blue shipping containers. A natural gathering space replete with multi-purpose space for communal dining, herb, flower and vegetable gardens, gardening classes, picnics and aimless afternoons.

The Assembly Park Outdoor Gallery Program is the next phase in a public art and activation program that seeks to spark interest and engagement at the heart of a new and evolving mixed-use development within Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. Through a series of dynamic public art opportunities, the program provides space for artists to create distinct moments within The Gardens that explore narratives of gathering and connection, with an invitational and celebratory spirit, animating a site in transition, as well as creating a platform for community outreach and engagement.

Mediums for commissions include:

  • Murals – paint applied directly to the corrugated shipping container facade.
  • Art reproduced on panelling that is affixed to the container structure. Mediums for this production could include: painting, photography, collage, digital art, etc.
  • Panels produced as custom 2D cut outs affixed to the container structure.
  • The Interactive Community Wall specifically calls for interactive/socially engaging work, which is to be realized through any of the mediums noted above.

Budgets are allocated based on the scope of the opportunity, and range of square footage surface area per site. Budgets range from $5,160 – $16,000. As part of the commission scope, each artist will be asked to do an artist talk at The Gardens/The Studios at Assembly Park (potentially in person or virtual).

Two sites are being commissioned through this Call:

The Interactive Community Wall
One artist or artist team will be commissioned to create a work that will remain in place for 2 years. This artwork will introduce an interactive element for community engagement. Commissioned for the entrance to the Gardens on a 20’ x 8’ shipping container facade, totaling 160 sq ft, this is a smaller opportunity open to international artists. One artist will be commissioned every 2 years until 2030.

The Art Alley
5 Canadian artists/artist teams will be commissioned to create works on the facades of 5 shipping containers. Each of these surfaces measures 40’ x 8’ and the site is visible from Highway 7. These works will remain in place for the duration of development (+/- 8 years).

Please refer to artpluspublic.com, for more information about this program and the opportunities.

We especially encourage artists in the Vaughan and York region to apply. We encourage artists that are Indigenous, Black, people of colour, women, 2SLGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and members of other marginalized communities to apply.

Artists are not asked to make a proposal at this time for initial artist selection.

Artist Selection will be curated by ART+PUBLIC UnLtd in consultation with a jury of representatives from the project team. From this Expression of Interest, selected artists will be contracted and tasked with developing concepts that respond to project briefs, working together with ART+PUBLIC UnLtd and with feedback from the project team.
