Apply for Plug In ICA’s 2025 Summer Institute, Magic Creek
Application Deadline: June, 20, 2025, 5pm CDT
Established in 2009, The Summer Institute is a free, international artist research program for professional artists and cultural workers in all disciplines and media. Each year, we invite artists that are critically leading conversations in their field to lead a two week Summer Institute. Each iteration of the Summer Institute invites participants to expand upon their own interests and projects and includes opportunities to work in a collaborative peer-to-peer environment through group activities, guest lectures, and workshops.
This year’s iteration of the Summer Institute, Magic Creek, will be led by Rodney LaTourelle and Louise Witthöft. It will run from August 11 to August 22, 2025. It will focus on a site-specific approach to pedagogy, citing the often-overlooked nature of everyday interconnections, systemic entanglements and the embedded aesthetics of the local environment. The program references Colony Creek, a modest stream that was forced underground during Winnipeg’s early development and that continues to flow beneath the land where Plug In ICA is situated. The transformation of the creek is a metaphor for the contested relations between humans and non-humans and the recognition of co-existent, yet unseen, realities in a post-colonial context. Whether in the realm of the imagination, the sublime or so-called magical, the Summer Institute is a consideration of the poetic terrain where the visible and the invisible overlap. There is a further emphasis on the provenance and the future of circular and sustainable materials, with a call to re-use, re-duce, re-cycle and re-imagine.
Project Requirements
There is no fee to participate in Magic Creek, but Summer Institute participants will be responsible for their own travel and accommodations while in Winnipeg.
Eligibility
Plug In ICA’s Summer Institute is part of its educational programs open to artists, writers, thinkers and various cultural workers from all backgrounds. It is a critical pedagogical context for communal learning, collaboration, and exchange.
