Museum of New Fellowship – Now Open!

Application Deadline: April 15, 2025

The call for applications for the Museum of New Fellowship 2025 is now open. It encourages and supports research in the New New art movement. Aspiring fellows should apply before April 15, 2025. Later applications will be considered if the position is not filled.

The New New art movement, comprising the work of two Canadian and nine American artists, is still largely misunderstood. Launched in Paris (1992) with the book New New Painting, and many museum shows in Europe, it was ridiculed by the art establishment, in the similar way the Impressionists were first received by the experts in the 19th century. But the works of two NNP artists already entered the collection of Harvard Art Museum (Marjorie Minkin and Jerald Webster). Other museums started collecting NNP even earlier: National Gallery in Prague in 2002, The Ludwig Collection in Vienna in 1993. The Fellowship is open to graduate students, Canadian and international art historians, curators, critics, independent researchers and other professionals working in the visual arts, museology or related disciplines. The name of the recipient fellow will be announced.

High Stakes, our Symposium with the AGO, March 4, 2006

The Fellowship will consist of three semesters over a duration of nine months, with a grant of $9,000 CAD. Each semester is to have a progressively deeper focus on social, aesthetic, and conceptual achievements of the New New movement, and its relationship to aspects of contemporary art, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation.

The research will be carried out on-site at the Museum of New in Toronto where the selected fellow will write a summary of each publication about the New New Painting movement, and later original critical essays. A public lecture is optional. The purpose of the Fellowship is to develop a community of informed professionals, and to gradually clear misconceptions entrenched in the art community.
