Call for Applications: Medalta International Artist in Residence Ceramics Program 2024

Call for Artists: Medalta International Artist in Residence Ceramics Program

Upcoming Deadline: April 15, 2024, 11:59 pm MT
Note: See below for complete deadline details

The Medalta International Artist in Residence (MIAIR) program is the heart of creativity at Medalta. Our internationally renowned program attracts artists worldwide and provides them with intensive, uninterrupted studio access. Artists can attend Medalta for a one-month, FLEX (2+ months), or Year-Long (September – July) artist residency. We have 12 semi-private studio spaces that foster open dialogue, skill sharing, and community building – while also providing artists with a dedicated space of their own to build, experiment, and workshop new ideas.

All artists-in-residence have 24-hour access to our Artist Facilities which are designed to accommodate and advance a wide range of ceramic practices and skill sets. Artists are encouraged to explore and develop their practice with access to a fully stocked glaze lab, plaster room, and electric, gas, and atmospheric kilns. The MIAIR program is open to artists in varying stages of their careers, and we encourage applications from emerging, mid-career, and established ceramic artists. We offer a fellowship opportunity for mid-career Canadian ceramicists as part of the Strojich Fellowship program, which constitutes a free one-month residency, lodging at the BMO Artist Lodge, and a $1000 stipend. The MIAIR program has established itself as a site for experimentation, research, development, and innovation.

Medalta is located in the scenic badlands and Historic Clay District of Medicine Hat in Treaty 7 territory and the traditional lands of the Siksika (Blackfoot), Kainai (Blood), Piikani (Peigan), Stoney Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina (Sarcee) as well as the Cree, Sioux, and the Saulteaux bands of the Ojibwa peoples – it is also the Homelands of the Métis Nation.

The BMO Artist Lodge is available for artists to rent during their stay and offers a communal, fully furnished living space surrounded by the iconic southern Alberta landscape. Our on-site housing is located a mere 10-minute walk from Medalta’s studio spaces and provides resident artists with an accessible and convenient living space.
