Call for Applications: Canada’s First Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate

We are seeking applications from established artists to be the first Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate. The focus of this role will be on promoting the arts in Canada.

Project Requirements

The Parliament of Canada established the position of Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate (Artist Laureate) through an amendment to the Parliament of Canada Act in 2024 to “promote the arts in Canada, through Parliament, including by fostering knowledge, enjoyment, awareness and development of the arts.”

The Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate Program is focused on arts promotion, rather than creation. Each person occupying the role of Artist Laureate will draw on their own unique perspective, experience and ideas to develop programming that will promote visual arts in Canada. Throughout their term, the Artist Laureate will receive guidance and support from the Library of Parliament in planning and delivering their proposed activities.

Eligibility Criteria

The individual selected as Artist Laureate must be an established artist who has made important and lasting contributions to visual arts in Canada and has a proven record of publicly showing or exhibiting their work. They must work in at least one of the following artistic disciplines as defined in the Parliament of Canada Act:

• drawing;
• painting;
• sculpture;
• printmaking;
• design;
• crafts;
• photography;
• videography;
• filmmaking; or
• digital creations.

In addition, they must:

• be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
• be able to communicate in English or French;
• have a substantial record of demonstrating artistic excellence;
• have made significant contributions to the visual arts community;
• be available, on occasion, to travel within Canada to promote the visual arts; and
• be available, on occasion, to participate in parliamentary events in Ottawa.

Compensation

The Artist Laureate role is not a full-time job—it is a distinguished position that comes with an annual stipend of $25,000 and a programming budget of up to $35,000 a year to cover expenses for approved activities, events and travel.

Project Requirements

Le Parlement du Canada a créé le poste d’artiste visuel officiel ou artiste visuelle officielle du Parlement (artiste officiel ou artiste officielle) au moyen d’une modification apportée en 2024 à la Loi sur le Parlement du Canada pour « promouvoir les arts au Canada par l’intermédiaire du Parlement, notamment en encourageant la population à mieux connaître les arts, à les apprécier, à y être sensible et en favorisant leur développement ».

Le Programme de l’artiste visuel officiel du Parlement est axé sur la promotion des arts plutôt que sur la création. Chaque personne qui occupera ce poste sera responsable de s’appuyer sur sa perspective, son expérience et ses idées uniques pour élaborer des programmes de promotion des arts visuels au Canada. Tout au long de son mandat, l’artiste officiel ou l’artiste officielle recevra des conseils et du soutien de la Bibliothèque du Parlement pour planifier et réaliser ses activités proposées.

Critères d’admissibilité

La personne sélectionnée comme artiste officiel ou artiste officielle doit être reconnue dans son domaine, avoir apporté une contribution importante et durable aux arts visuels au Canada et avoir fait ses preuves en matière de présentation ou d’exposition publique de ses œuvres. Elle doit travailler dans au moins une des disciplines artistiques suivantes, telles que définies dans la Loi sur le Parlement du Canada :

• le dessin;
• la peinture;
• la sculpture;
• la gravure de reproduction;
• le design;
• l’artisanat;
• la photographie;
• la vidéographie;
• le cinéma;
• les créations numériques.

De plus, elle doit respecter les critères suivants :

• posséder la citoyenneté canadienne ou la résidence permanente au Canada;
• être en mesure de communiquer en français ou en anglais;
• avoir faire preuve de manière substantielle de son excellence artistique;
• avoir contribué de façon significative à la communauté des arts visuels;
• être disponible, à l’occasion, pour voyager au Canada afin de promouvoir les arts visuels;
• être disponible, à l’occasion, pour participer à des événements parlementaires à Ottawa.

Rémunération

Le rôle d’artiste officiel ou artiste officielle n’est pas un emploi à temps plein – c’est un poste prestigieux qui s’accompagne d’une allocation annuelle de 25 000 $ et d’un budget de programmation allant jusqu’à 35 000 $ par an pour couvrir les dépenses liées aux activités, aux événements et aux déplacements approuvés.
