MFA Art, University of Lethbridge

The Department of Art, Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge invites applications to the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art program.

The MFA in Art program offers emerging and mature artists, thinkers and makers, the opportunity to pursue graduate study in contemporary art practice. Graduate students join a dynamic community and enjoy an exceptional level of interaction with renowned faculty artists, scholars, technical support staff and visiting artists. Our program encourages interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary excellence in practice-based research that leads to a terminal degree.

Integration of theory and practice, indigenous knowledge, critical perspectives on culture and society, material and conceptual investigations in all media, provides graduate students a stimulating and supportive context in which to learn, experiment, innovate and be challenged.

Located on traditional Blackfoot territory, overlooking the Oldman River valley in the iconic Arthur Erickson designed Centre for the Arts, the Department of Art provides spacious studios, a full compliment of technical and material workshops, and state of the art equipment. The Centre for the Arts’ complex, home to the Departments of Art, Drama, Music and New Media, includes robust digital labs, fabrication workshops, the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery, an audio recording studio, art studios, theatres and a recital hall. Lethbridge is home to a well-connected local, internationally engaged arts community and nationally recognized galleries.

Our graduate students pursue research-creation in any form, including: audiovisual, digital fabrication, drawing, experimental cinema, fibre, installation, media art, net art, painting, performance, print, photography, publication, public sphere, sculpture, social practice, sound, spatial practice, and video.

Art NOW, our unparalleled visiting speakers series, ensures direct exposure to and participation in the current debates and practices shaping global art, design and architecture today, while the University of Lethbridge art collection, among the largest of its kind in Canada, fosters student engagement with historical and contemporary artwork.
