NSCAD University’s Master of Arts in Art Education

NSCAD University’s Master of Arts in Art Education (MAAE) is a unique program for those looking to educate, place-make, shift perceptions, and create change through art education. With a focus on equity, inclusion, decolonization, anti-racism, human development, belonging, and well-being, the program emphasizes the importance of bringing people together to create change and instill knowledge through art education and action.

What our MAAE students can expect:

A 36-credit program offering a theory-rich academic experience.
Courses addressing topics such as: culturally responsive teaching; land-based pedagogies; radical, or experimental pedagogies; arts integration; visual literacy; materiality; curriculum design and development; equitable instructional and assessment models; studio art pedagogy; teacher training and service education; inclusive policy development; and community-institutional partnerships.
Rigorous research training and hands-on, field-based practicum that reflects current trends and roles that art educators play in diverse professional settings.
The MAAE prepares students for employment in both traditional or contemporary work settings, including community, museum and curatorial, and educational settings. Our alumni become successful educators, curators, community program and start-up developers, entrepreneurs, and much more.

Join us at NSCAD University
Inspiring generations of makers for over a century, NSCAD University is one of Canada’s oldest independent cultural institutions. Today, it continues to be regarded as a principal centre for education and research in visual culture in North America. NSCAD University is in K’jipuktuk /Halifax in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. Through active inquiry, NSCD students identify, define and approach the complexities of our world, challenge conventional thinking, and create value and economic impact through art, media, craft and design.
