Tang’s Artist Talk is free and open to the public on Thursday May 15, 6:30 – 7:30pm at the AGB. Known for his imaginative fusion of both futuristic technologies and ancient traditions, Tang will discuss his creative process, influences, and the evolution of his work.
Tang’s sold-out Art as Research: Mentorship Course, running May 13 – 17, 2025 is part of the AGB’s 50th Anniversary exhibition A Curve, Not A Line, featuring work from the Gallery’s permanent collection. Held from May 9 to August 10, the exhibition is the result of a dynamic collaboration between the Gallery’s curatorial and education teams, bringing together different perspectives to create a multi-sensorial experience.
Designed to highlight key works from our collection of Canadian contemporary ceramics, A Curve, Not A Line explores thematic and material connections that speak to timefulness, slowness, playfulness, and resourcefulness with both historical and ancestral traditions and contemporary innovations. By integrating curatorial research with educational insights, the exhibition fosters deeper engagement, inviting visitors to connect with the artworks through multiple lenses and positions—whether artistic, cultural, or social. This collaborative approach ensures a rich and accessible exploration of the collection, inspiring dialogue, and discovery for all audiences.

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Hmmm, I love my face, but I really wish the rest of me was a cat.”? If this sounds like you, today is your lucky day! Ceramic sculptor Jonah Strub is teaching a two-part workshop in which students will learn proper hand building techniques for self-portraiture, and surface decoration with underglazes to create creatures that are part you, and part animal. Animals can be real, mythological, or hybrids of many kinds of critters – creativity and silliness are strongly encouraged!
This workshop is suitable for all levels but some experience with clay hand building will be beneficial. To get the most out of the workshop and to aid the instructor, students are encouraged to arrive with an idea for their animal self-portrait, along with basic sketches and/or reference images.

Jonah Strub is a Toronto-based ceramic sculptor. Jonah’s artwork is a visual love letter to the aesthetics of camp, kitsch, musical theatre, Yiddish humour, and drag. Jonah strives to project joy and playfulness through his work. By using humour, bright colours, animal prints, and bushels of body hair, Jonah highlights the joys of Matzo ball-flavoured femininity, effervescent queerness, the beauty of bric-a-brac, and the opulence of outrageous up-dos.
