The bright dancing lights of the aurora are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern hemisphere is known as ‘Aurora Borealis’ Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.
The aurora is rich with spiritual traditions, with most involving the spirits of the departed. The Inuit believe that souls of the dead dance in the aurora. Sometimes the spirits are carrying torches to guide those still in this world. The Inuit call the aurora aksarnirq.
Over the last 17 years of traveling Canada and making art influenced by these travels, I have found myself exploring stories of the mystical Aurora in my paintings many times. These are otherworldly, spiritual, and symbolic paintings executed with a ‘collage-like’ style of placing objects and figures in settings where they exist in the same landscape.
Materials used in creating these original paintings include; acrylic and gouache paints, some with gold leaf details gilded to layered, sculptural and textured surfaces. A visual storyteller, Saturley takes us on a journey of Canada’s North through her eyes. “While some describe me as a visual storyteller, others suggest that my work invites viewers to create their own stories. To me, art serves as a conduit for appreciating life more profoundly, and I believe that it simply exists, without the need for understanding or labels. Each viewer brings their own unique experiences and perspectives when engaging with a work of art, which can often trigger memories. When an art lover connects with my work, a gift is both given and received.”
A journey through 25 paintings on canvas – spanning 17 years.
