A JOURNAL OF READING AND MAKING
AN EXPERIMENTAL PUBLISHING PLATFORM
‘evolve’, issue 3, 2021
Over the course of 2020, art +reading began a conversation about how to create a new publishing model for this time. In this, we imagined a series of interactive projects that went beyond an online exhibition or social media takeover, but rather aimed to enact a curated series of connected experimental weeklong projects utilizing Instagram @artsletterspress as a creative publishing platform in its own right. For this ongoing series of interventions, we have invited 19 artists from Canada and abroad to create material interventions, multi-platform conversations, process videos and reflections, time-based installations, walkabouts, poetic experiments, hyperlinks, and other artistic engagements. A special printed edition of art + reading issue 3, evolve, will be published in winter/spring 2021-2022.
Please join us on INSTAGRAM @artsletterspress for upcoming projects and view the entire series to date currently archived.
The official launch of the series took place in May 2021. To date we have completed 12 interventions centered on the theme of ‘evolve’ and have experienced contributions from artists such as Stephen Hobbs (South Africa and Ireland), Johannes Zits (Ontario), Nicole Seisler (USA), and Linda Duvall (Saskatchewan), to name a few. Upcoming projects include work by Maralynn Cherry (Ontario), Mary Anne Barkhouse (Ontario), and Millie Chen and Warren Quigley (Ontario). Each contribution offers a unique take on the theme and expands the conversation as our creative community grows.

Arts + Letters Press, established in 2017 by artists Jenn Law and Penelope Stewart, is an independent, not-for-profit, experimental publishing platform. As a duo, we approach this project as a collaborative artistic gesture that draws on our interests of ‘reading as a material practice’. From the beginning, our vision has been to expand the field of publishing, fostering multi-format conversations, artistic projects, exhibitions, performances, and screenings, while linking the analogue with the virtual. The International serial publication art + reading is the foundation of this collaborative endeavour, examining the relationship between reading and making, while facilitating spin off initiatives that animate material conversations and multi-disciplinary projects.
