Following an Ontario-wide open call and after reaching our capacity limit of 300 submissions this year, three jurors—Atanas Bozdarov, Hibah Mian, and Sarah Quinton—carefully assessed the artworks based purely on the images and anonymous artist statements provided to determine the final selection. Their choices reflect the broad range of subject matter, techniques, and approaches that came forward in this open call.

Images (left to right) – Honourable mentions: Hafsa Murtaza, Ambivalence of Mimicry, 2024 and Omar Canales-Cisneros, Hermanos, 2024; Curator’s choice: Carmen Mahave, Canis Cervicapir, 2023.
This exhibition includes sculpture, textiles, photography, drawing, and painting, as well as interactive, digital, and multi-media works. This year’s selection is notable for the many pieces that adopt an inventive use of materials—such as silicone, kami-ito, and sand—or work with reclaimed objects. As with any juried show, the themes explored here are wide-ranging. However, some common threads emerged in this year’s selection of works. A number of pieces explore spaces of personal interconnections, challenge gender norms, or reflect on untold stories and experiences of immigration. An emphasis on acts of empathy, transformation, and the desire to consider new perspectives shines through in many of these works.
Our thanks extend to all of the artists who shared their work with us this year through our open call. We continue to be inspired by your creativity and commitment to your artistic practices.
