What would life feel like without clocks or calendars—outside of the relentless current of time?

Anthony Gebrehiwot’s work challenges our assumptions about temporality, questioning how language, culture, and science have bound human experience to the ticking clock. Drawing on quantum theories and the writing of Rasheedah Phillips, which reveal phenomena beyond the arrow of past>present>future, and African and Afrodiasporic understandings of time as a layered and communal spiral, Gebrehiwot proposes alternative models of existence. His photographs and digital collages bridge futuristic imagery with historical African aesthetics to envision a reality beyond colonial structures of time and identity.

The exhibition unfolds across three bodies of work: Gebrehiwot’s Veilscapes (inspired by works of the same name by American artist, Delita Martin) transform the gallery into a layered temporal and visual experience; MAHABA portrays bold shamanic figures manifesting futures while recalling ancestral histories; and a collection of digital collages that evoke dimensions beyond human perception. Gebrehiwot’s intimate portraits of friends and fellow creatives radiate with affective power, inviting empathy and collective reimagining of how we move forward together.

Latcham Art Centre gratefully acknowledges the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville for their generous support of this exhibition. This project was produced with support from the Ontario Arts Council Exhibition Assistance Program.

About the Artist

Anthony Gebrehiwot is an award-winning artist and community leader whose creative lens re-visions photography as an ongoing dialogue of social change between subject and society.

Gebrehiwot seeks to communicate without language in an intimate and vulnerable way: through his art, he portrays the vocabulary of race, masculinity, history, perception, and vulnerability. Combining contrasting landscapes, Black bodies, and raw human emotion, Gebrehiwot explores the affective power of Black bodies in confronting the viewer’s humanity and empathy.
