The City of Toronto’s Arts Services Unit delivers high-quality, inclusive arts programming, events and services in collaboration with partners, artists and arts organizations that serve diverse communities outside of Toronto’s core, including seasonal programs that meaningfully engage adults, children and/or youth in creative expression, and arts-based skill building and learning.

Adult Art Instructors and Child/Youth Art Instructors are currently being recruited to instruct programs at Cedar Ridge Creative Centre and the Clark Centre for the Arts. Artists with expertise in Pottery, Drawing & Painting, Fibre Arts, Sewing/Fashion Design, Photography, Digital Media, and Printmaking with experience teaching adults, children and youth are invited to apply.

Adult Instructor Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, implements, instructs and evaluates program session for advanced level arts programs for adults in a specified medium (including but not limited to Pottery, Drawing & Painting, Fibre Arts, Sewing/Fashion Design, Photography, Digital Media, and Printmaking).
  • Provides in-studio demonstrations on various aspects and techniques in the specified medium appropriate to the skill level of the class.
  • Provide professional level individual critiques and leads class discussions to advance independent study and progress in the genre or medium.
  • Demonstrates and teaches students regarding tool use, equipment and technical aspects related to the art program.
  • Educates students on Health & Safety procedures to be followed in studio arts specific to the medium.
  • Advertise and promote the program in conjunction with manager.

Adult Instructor Qualifications:

  • Considerable teaching experience in a related field or art discipline at the adult level.
  • Extensive technical knowledge and experience related to the specified medium including studio experience.
  • Degree or Diploma in the specified medium OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety practices in relation to working in the studio arts and specified medium.
  • Portfolio required.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work as required including occasional work at special events and exhibits.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • A Police Reference Check will be required as a condition of employment for this position.
  • You possess certification in Parks and Recreation Ontario’s Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD). Applicants who meet all other qualifications can view the City of Toronto’s Leadership Guide to find and register for PHCD course, in order to meet this qualification. Please note, during Covid-19, applicants will be provided with access to an Online PHCD workshop upon being successful in the job competition.

Child/Youth Instructor Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, implements, instructs and evaluates beginner level arts programs for children and youth.
  • Delivers a program session for art instruction to children/youth in a specified medium or genre (including but not limited to Pottery, Drawing & Painting, Fibre Arts, Sewing/Fashion Design, Photography, Digital Media, Printmaking).
  • Provides in-studio demonstrations on various aspects and techniques in the specified medium or genre appropriate to the age and skill level of the class.
  • Demonstrates techniques in the arts program appropriate to the skill level.
  • Demonstrates and teaches students regarding tool use, equipment and technical aspects related to the art program.
  • Instructs curriculum linked education programs for school groups.
  • Educates students on Health & Safety procedures to be followed in studio arts specific to the medium or genre.
  • Assists in marketing and promotion of the program.

Child/Youth Instructor Qualifications:

  • Education, strong interest and proven knowledge in the medium or genre sought to teach.
  • Post-secondary education in chosen artistic medium or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidate must present a portfolio of artwork for review at the time of interview.
  • Prior experience working with and teaching children.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work as required including occasional work at special events and exhibits.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety practices in relation to working in the studio arts.
