ART-218: Illustrative Design

The study and practice of illustration in design including a brief history, industry production process, copyright, marketing, diversity of styles, and market sectors. Using industry standard original media, students will solve illustrative problems in key market applications.

ART-222: Introduction to Media Design

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of computer-based graphic design. Students will learn the formal, aesthetic, and communicative aspects of creating effective graphic images. Studio course, six hours a week.

Responsibilities

  • All duties associated with teaching this course. Such duties are guided by approved course-level learning outcomes.
  • Scheduled office hours with students.
  • Non-classroom time made up of preparation of lectures, student consultation, marking or grading, including grade appeals and cases of academic dishonesty.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

Redeemer University invites applications for an adjunct instructor in the Art program for the fall term 2024. The candidate:

  • must be aligned with and passionate about Redeemer’s Christian mission of integrating faith in teaching.
  • should understand digital media (or illustration) as an expressive and conceptual medium with its own history, languages, and contemporary practices.
  • should have an active practice in digital art or design (or illustration), coupled with professional achievements such as exhibitions, publications, commissions, grants, or residencies.
  • Possessing a relevant Master’s degree or a PhD are valued, but public standing in the discipline will be considered.
  • The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record (or show potential) of excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • As Redeemer looks to expand its offerings in digital media, expertise in related areas such as illustration, digital photography, and a range of digital approaches would be an advantage.

Compensation

Compensation is $5,900 + 4% vacation pay for a 3.0 credit course.

The Application Process

As a liberal arts and sciences university rooted in the Reformed tradition of Christianity, we seek candidates committed to this framework. Applicants should submit:

  • evidence of teaching quality
  • visual documentation of selected projects, 10 files max.
  • a list that details, for each portfolio item, the title, medium, and year. You may add a brief comment highlighting the project’s relevance to your application.
  • an Artist Statement
  • a short statement describing their own Christian faith commitment and practice, its alignment with Redeemer’s mission and its impact on their academic and professional work. A range of qualifications will be evaluated, including distinguishing characteristics that demonstrate congruence with Redeemer’s identity as a university in the Protestant and particularly Reformed Christian tradition.
  • the names of two individuals who have agreed to provide letters of reference should the applicant advance to a later stage of the process.
