C Magazine is celebrating four decades of publishing with “40 works for 40 years” at The 20th Annual C Magazine Contemporary Art Auction. For half its history, C Magazine has relied on the generosity artists and buyers demonstrate during the auction. This year, in honour of C’s 40th, we are pleased to present a special anniversary auction and collection. Bidding will open online at Waddingtons.ca on October 26 and run until November 4, 2024. Donated by artists connected to the magazine, our special anniversary auction collection represents 40 of the most acclaimed and promising practices in Canadian contemporary art and reflects C’s essential role in its past, present, and future. As the auction opens online, preview the collection in-person at C’s 40th Anniversary Celebration and enjoy an evening of music, drinks, and snacks in support of C at 40 years. Every ticket and every bid help secure the future of C Magazine, a forum that’s vital to the contemporary art community in Canada.

Highlighting the central role artist projects have played in C’s history, the auction features 40 limited edition prints by Dan Starling, one of which will be gifted to the first bidder on every work. This year’s auction is also notable as the first to include “experience” lots, offering bidders opportunities to engage directly with artists, curators, and cultural workers through activities (ranging from practical to luxurious) in Toronto, Vancouver, and New York. Learn more about these activities and register to bid by creating an account at waddingtons.ca today. And don’t forget, claim your edition by bidding early! You’re also supporting C Magazine, and by extension, the hundreds of artists, writers, thinkers, students, educators, and arts workers who engage the magazine and its programs every year. They look to C for critical recognition, editorial care, and early-career support, to sharpen their ideas, conduct research, engage in a forum with their peers, and so much more.

C Magazine, established in 1984, is a contemporary art and criticism periodical that functions as a forum for significant ideas in art and its contexts. Each issue explores a theme that is singularly engaged with emerging and prevailing perspectives through original art writing, criticism, and artist projects. Our content focuses on contemporary art in Canada and the activities of Canadian practitioners living abroad—with an emphasis on those from equity-owed communities—as well as on international practices and dialogues. We are committed to facilitating meaningful, pluralistic, interdisciplinary, historically-engaged, and imaginative conversations about art.

C Magazine’s 40th Anniversary Celebration and 20th Annual Contemporary Art Auction are presented with the generous support of museumpros, Art Toronto, Top Top Projects, Sonic Print, Waddington’s, and Dim Sum King.
