CONTACT Photobook Workshops and Reviews

As part of CONTACT Photography Festival’s 30th anniversary year, we present three opportunities to support photographic artists on the path to publishing a photobook. Artists will receive conceptual and practical insight about their projects, and gain invaluable feedback for applying to the annual Burtynsky Grant of $5,000.

Please note that due to limited space, all applications to these programs will go through a selection process. Applications are free; criteria can be found at contactphoto.com/photobooks or by emailing photobook@contactphoto.com.

Photobook Reviews

Stephen Bulger Gallery, 1356 Dundas St W, Toronto
Deadline to Apply: Friday, April 10 by midnight ET
Max Capacity: 20 participants

Successful applicants will be notified by Tuesday, April 14 and invoiced for the program fee of $50+HST.

This program is open to those who are working on a photobook dummy, as well as those considering the book form for their well-developed projects. Workshop: Shaping and Editing with Intention
Hosted by Deadbeat Club
Sunday, May 3, 2026 | 9am–6pm
CONTACT Photobook Lab, 80 Spadina Ave, Suite 205, Toronto
Deadline to Apply: Sunday, April 19 by midnight ET
Max Capacity: 8 participants

Successful participants will be notified by Tuesday, April 21 and invoiced for the workshop fee of $400+HST.

This immersive, full-day workshop with Clint Woodside, founder of Deadbeat Club, is designed to support photographers in transforming their projects into compelling photobooks. This workshop is ideal for artists whose projects have a clear intention—even if the final form is still coming into focus—and who are ready to explore how editing and sequencing can bring their work closer to publication.

Over the course of this workshop, participants will:

Refine intent through Editing & Group Discussion: the group will look closely at each participant’s work through collaborative editing exercises and open group conversations. This process will help sharpen narrative, sequence, and structure—pushing projects toward a more resolved form.

Receive Personalized Consultations: Clint, alongside published Deadbeat Club artists Maude Arsenault (Entangled and Resurfacing) and Richard Renaldi (Billions Served), will provide personalized feedback tailored to each participant’s project, offering valuable insights on how to refine their work and push it towards completion.

Alongside hands-on development of individual projects, Clint will share insight into Deadbeat Club’s publishing process, offering real-world advice and informal access to their experience as artists and independent publishers. This workshop is an opportunity to strengthen your project’s foundation while connecting with a community of peers and mentors invested in the photobook as a powerful form.
