The Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art
An Evening With Gallerist
Maureen Paley
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29, 2023
War Memorial Hall, University of Guelph
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
Maureen Paley was one of the first to present contemporary art in London’s East End and has been a pioneer of the current art scene, promoting and showing a diverse range of artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans and Gillian Wearing who she is credited with discovering in the early 1990’s. Founded in 1984 in a Victorian terraced house, the gallery has expanded beyond its indie roots to three galleries in both London and Hove. In 2022, it was named one of London’s best art galleries by the OPUMO Platform. In July 2017, Paley opened the second space called Morena di Luna in Hove, East Sussex, and a third space named Studio M in October 2020, located in Shoreditch, London. Paley has developed a leading and influential contemporary program that now represents 48 international artists.
The annual Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art was established in 2007 and is made possible through the support of Dasha Shenkman OBE, a Canadian art collector and philanthropist who lives in the United Kingdom.
The lecture is open to the public and will be followed by a question-and-answer period moderated by Robert Enright, University of Guelph Professor in Art Criticism.
