Woojae Kim, Artist – Vancouver

Woojae Kim is a Korean artist and writer living on the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples (Vancouver). His works explore rituals of interdependency and listening to inaudible frequencies of relationships with non-humans and the land. His work has recently been exhibited in Vancouver (Artspeak, Dreams Comma Delta, Afternoon Projects), Toronto (The Plumb) and New York (Psychic Readings*). His texts have been published in Canadian Art and the Capilano Review. Kim received an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College. His solo exhibition I Hear a Silent Dissonance is on display at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art until May 8.
- A Letter to the Future

(photo: Dominic Boyer)
The “Letter to the Future” plaque is a memorial to the first Icelandic glacier (Okjökull) lost to climate change. Over the next two hundred years, all our main glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you will know if we did it.
- The Emigrants by W. G. Sebald

This book was gifted to me recently by a dear friend. I am ⅓ way through it. There is something magical about how Sebald builds the narrative with photographs.
- Earthset photograph from Artemis 2

Seeing this photograph gave me some comfort amidst the stream of negative news. The Eclipse photograph is visually even more stunning than the Earthset photograph, but there is more emotional attraction to looking at ourselves – even in planetary photographs.
- Invincible by Tool

I recently shared this song with a friend who is going through a difficult time. It is the first song I play every time I turn on my music app.
- Speaker building

My non-art interest has been speaker building. The DIY audio community is one of the genuinely wholesome corners of the internet. There is a lot of encouragement, generous knowledge sharing, and people who are just happy to help.
