🔮 Snack Witch Joni Cheung 🍡 is a grateful, uninvited guest who was born – and knows she wants to die – on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, Stó:lō, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh peoples. They are a Certified Sculpture Witch with an MFA from Concordia University (2023). She holds a BFA with Distinction in Visual Art (2018) from the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. As a wicked #magicalgirl ✨ who eats art and makes snacks, she has exhibited in and curated shows, off- and online, across Turtle Island and beyond. Currently, they are based on the stolen lands of the Kanien’kehá:ka and Mi’kmaq peoples, working as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Design and Computation Arts at Concordia University and the School of Graduate Studies at NSCAD University. Her exhibition fill full feel full is on display at Eastern Edge Artist-Run Centre until July 5.
Aside from art-making, Joni likes wandering down grocery store aisles and drinking bubble tea.🧋
(Note from Joni: This list was a REALLY DIFFICULT activity!! So, I gave myself the parameter of choosing things related to my recent visit to Ktaqmkuk – Newfoundland 🌈 ~)
- Oceans/shorelines

(photo: Snack Witch Joni Cheung)
Being from the West Coast, I’m constantly trying to get back to the sea. I miss the salty ocean mist that’s accented by the aroma of dank seaweed. All the oceans I’ve had the privilege to spend time with smell and feel a little different, which is just SO COOL!! I got to reunite with the most eastern part of “Canada” while in Ktaqmkuk – Newfoundland this spring. Two years later, it is just as hypnotic and sublime as I remember. Stare a little too long, and it starts to call me in. 🌊
- Fiddlehead French toast

I never thought I’d eat savoury French toast, but I did at The Grounds Café, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Like, at least once every three days 🤤 It’s also the first time I’ve had fiddleheads!! ☠️
- $5 mussels

WHERE ELSE CAN YOU JUST WALK INTO A GROCERY STORE AND BUY FRESH MUSSELS FOR $5??? Speaks for itself!! 🤯
- Atlantic beer

(photo: Snack Witch Joni Cheung)
I’m grateful for the friends I’ve made while spending time on the East Coast, and one thing my gut has noticed is that the beer across the (sea) board is tastier and better for my tummy compared to other places in Turtle Island that I will not name lol. Beer is not my preferred sipping activity, but my beverage of choice was a pint of Cream Ale or Stout while by the Atlantic Ocean. (Ask me about my favourite bars on the East Coast thus far!!!) 🍻
- Soba

Technically, Soba does not live in Ktaqmkuk, but they are one of the biggest reasons I even get to visit all these new places, so she is the true #1 on this list! You can thank Soba for me not kicking the bucket early: they’re my dependent. 💗
