Michelle Sound, Artist

Michelle Sound is a Cree and Métis artist and mother. She is a member of Wapsewsipi Swan River First Nation in Treaty 8 Territory. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, School for the Contemporary Arts, and a Master of Applied Arts from Emily Carr University Art + Design. Her public art pieces include a printed transit mural for the City of Edmonton and a printed mural at the Canadian Embassy in Paris. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is held in the collections of the Indigenous Art Centre (CIRNAC), Forge Project NY, the McMichael Collection, and the National Gallery of Canada. Her exhibition We all go home to the stars is on display at the MacLaren Art Centre until October 25.
- Caribou fur tufting
I love making caribou tufts. I love the colours and how they look before they are even shaped into little pom poms. I actually buy way too much caribou fur just because I like looking at it in the studio.
Gambling for adults who don’t gamble and also love cute things. I love all these tiny little animals, and for some reason it is so fun to buy these little bags and be surprised by which one you’ll get. A little cat inside a hamburger costume? A bunny as French fries? Obsessed.
Have loved them since Turn on the Bright Lights. Saw them this summer live in Tacoma at Point Defiance Park, and it was such a beautiful setting and so great to enjoy and share my fave music with my son who also loves them.

- THEE Miss Flo
She is such a butt. She is constantly playing with and sitting all over my art supplies. I work with everything a cat loves – embroidery thread, sinew, lots of fur – and she has destroyed whatever she can get her paws on. She has lots of things to sit and sleep on, but she loves to sleep on elk hide and use drum frames as a pillow. Love her. Best shelter cat ever.
