Huy Lam, Artist – Toronto

Born in Vietnam, Huy Lam’s art is rooted in an ongoing fascination with non-verbal communication and an emphasis on process-based construction that is informed by his meditation practice. He applies his distinctive aesthetic in precisely crafted works made with wood, brass, stainless steel, and, more recently, paper. As a self-taught wood and metal-worker, Lam looks to celebrate the natural, diverse, and malleable qualities of his mediums, with a focus on materiality and tactility. Using his experience as a professional photographer, he applies his understanding of light to his calculative designs, resulting in illusions of form, dimension, and space. His solo exhibition Yield is on display at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery until November 16.

  1. Travel and history

I’ve traveled to almost thirty countries, including most of Central America, Southeast Asia, Egypt, and a bunch of others – but it feels like I’ve barely scratched the surface. I’m driven by a curiosity to learn about each country’s history from their perspective. I am interested in history from all perspectives as opposed to a Western dominated narrative.

  1. African Stream

Relating to my first item, I am learning so much about African history and contemporary news from this purely African perspective. Go check them out on YouTube and other platforms.

  1. Biographies

I’ve not read that many, but Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson is one of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read. Einstein by Isaacson is also amazing, and Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela is a must read.

  1. Sci-fi

I love sci-fi. I’ve probably watched the new Dune movies over twenty times, and Blade Runner 2049 and the original film fifty times. The stories are classics, but I think it’s definitely the cinematography and director Denis Villeneuve’s vision.

  1. Mushroom supplements

I’ve been taking this mixed supplement which includes Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Reishi, Shiitake, and others for years, and it definitely makes me a better artist. Hahaha. Please do your own research 🙂
