Chris Glabb, Artist – Ottawa/New York

Chris Glabb is an emerging Métis artist who received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa. His work, rooted in printmaking and painting, examines cultural capital. He explores how references and images can function as a form of currency that grants access, legitimacy, and belonging. Through irony and lowbrow referentiality, he aims to recontextualize existing imagery to critique hierarchy and navigate intersectional Queerness and Indigenous identities. Chris’ recent work has been shown at the Ottawa Art Gallery, AXENÉO7, and de Montigny Contemporary. His solo exhibition Roadkill Paintings (Found Series) is on display at the Shenkman Arts Centre until July 4.
- Magenta

Magenta is juvenile and kitschy and never quite feels right, but that’s what makes it exciting. I use it all, but I really like Windsor & Newton Quinacridone Magenta.
- Ice cream trucks

There is an ice cream truck that parks in front of my apartment during the summer. The music is annoying when you’re trying to concentrate, but the blue raspberry slushie is delicious.
- Believe by Cher

This is arguably the best song ever recorded. I remember my mom having this song on a burned CD in her car. I loved it on the drive to first grade circa 2006, and I love it now. This is what I listen to when I feel hopeless or bored. Believe is truly timeless.
- Art/Work by Heather Darcy Bhandari & Jonathan Melber

This book is a contemporary artist’s best friend. It was recommended to me by a more established artist who said it had all the knowledge she wished she got from her MFA. I suggest reading it once cover to cover, then going back and marking the sections most relevant to your goals. Right now, I’m focused on sections about residencies, grant writing, and commercial gallery representation. Art/Work has everything you’ll need to navigate the art world, especially as an emerging artist.

There is nothing more exhilarating than the promise of EIGHTEEN MILLION FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND EUROS.
