Online Application Form
New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and nationalities to submit works on the theme Sound Culture for consideration in New Adventures in Sound Art’s 2026 programming.
How do the sounds of a community reflect and convey its ethics, philosophies and general way of life? How does the design of space and the sounds found there form the sonic identity and character of a community?
March 12, 2026 marks NAISA’s 25th anniversary! Moving from Toronto in 2017 to the rural village of South River in the Almaguin Highlands region has also meant a change in NAISA’s Sound Culture from the urban south to the rocks, lakes and forests of Northern Ontario. Our audience includes those who are in search of a deliberate change in the composition of life experiences and the resulting acoustic rhythms. We are interested in presenting works by artists that reflect their Sound Culture in our unique location.
Works submitted will also be eligible for the James Bailey award and the Andra McCartney award.
2) Springscape Series

New Adventures in Sound Art presents its 2025 edition of Springscapes, an annual series that highlights the dramatic changes that take place in the natural soundscape from winter to spring and includes installations, workshops and live-stream events.
“This series begins with exploring the rich spring soundscape of the Almaguin Highlands and expands from there to explore NAISA’s 2025 theme – There is Art in our Nature.” — Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art

Almaguin Community Soundscapes is an exhibition that surrounds participants with the sounds of spring using a multi-channel speaker system and recordings made by residents of the Almaguin Highlands. The spring season is a special time of the year in the region as the snow melts, the ice breaks up on the lakes and the arrival of insects and birds is loudly announced by the sounds made by peepers. Listen online to the soundscapes on the Aporee Sound Map.
Contribute Spring Soundscapes!
NAISA welcomes residents in the Almaguin Highlands to contribute the spring soundscapes from their homes (equipment provided). Please visit NAISA or phone/email to make arrangements.

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) launches its 27th edition of the Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art with summer-long events that feature indoor and outdoor exhibitions as well as special World Listening Day weekend events July 18 to 20.
“The complexity of the natural world is astounding in its diversity and musical nuance. South River is located in a region where the natural world has had many impacts on art making. Sound Travels 2025 uses NAISA’s theme for the year —There is Art in Our Nature — this time to provide audiences with the opportunity to hear what is below the water’s surface, to listen in to the sounds that exist in the rivers and lakes, which in the Almaguin Highlands have historically served as passage ways between communities.” — Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art

Voice of the Water is an interactive rotary telephone-based listening station. Using sounds collected from inside the lakes and rivers around South River, Voice of the Water encourages listeners to connect with the local waterways as they explore the boundaries and overlaps between planes of existence. The Artist’s goal is to create a venue for contemplation, catharsis, and a deeper engagement with the surrounding environment.
