Aaron Moran, Artist – Chilliwack

Aaron Moran is an artist based in Chilliwack, BC, the unceded traditional territory of the Stó:lō Nation. He holds a BFA from Emily Carr University and an MFA from the University of Windsor. Subjects featured across his body of work include suburbia, urban development, waste, domesticity, community, and play. In addition to his studio practice, he produces public artworks and facilitates community-engaged projects with the intention of fostering dialogue and building interdisciplinary relationships. He also curates and publishes book works as Poor Quality. Along with fellow Fraser Valley-based artist Ember Munin, Moran will be exhibiting a new body of painted works in the exhibition Small Colourful Life at the Ranger Station Gallery in Harrison Hot Springs, BC, this July.
- Shopping receipts

I have a regular Friday morning grocery shopping routine where I go to the store early in the morning before I start work. Over the years I’ve made a habit of collecting the discarded shopping lists that I regularly find in parked buggies, store aisles, and the empty parking lot. Domesticity is a theme that I explore in my work, and I find it interesting to see what people are buying, how they organize their thoughts, and their penmanship. I see shopping lists as little windows into people’s personal lives.
- CDs

I have an old stereo in my studio that features a five-disc changer. I collected CDs all through my youth and young adulthood, and still have most of them to this day. Rather than have them sit and collect dust, I listen to them when I am working. Listening to CDs allows me to delve back into albums that were important in my life.
- Falafel

My favourite food is falafel. I sometimes make them from scratch, but almost always have a box of mix and a jar of tahini in the house.
- Dandelions

My favourite flower is the dandelion. Now that spring is here, they are popping up everywhere. I used to think they were weeds and went to great lengths to remove them from my lawn, but now I love them. Dandelions have become an important art-making material for me in recent years. This mostly stemmed from my daughter’s interest in picking wildflowers. I have a new appreciation for them now.
- Kids art

I have a folder of collected art that my kids have made over the years. I am fairly ruthless about recycling loose papers, scraps, and drawings that I find around the house, but there are some pieces I just can’t throw away. I regularly look at them to keep myself inspired. The body of work I will be exhibiting in July was directly informed by this collection of kids drawings, collages, and paintings.
