Glenfiddich Invites Canadian Artists to Apply for the 19th Annual Artists in Residence Program, a Renowned Residency Valued at Over $26,000 CDN
The prestigious Glenfiddich Artists in Residence program is now accepting Canadian applicants for the 2025 residency program in Dufftown, Scotland
Canada’s favourite Scotch, Glenfiddich® Single Malt Whisky is pleased to announce an Open Call to Artists living and working in Canada to submit proposals for the internationally acclaimed Glenfiddich® Artists in Residence Prize. The Canadian winner of the much-coveted prize will join artists from Africa, China, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, to live and work at the historic Glenfiddich Distillery in the summer of 2025.
Valued at over $26,000 CDN (plus travel and accommodation), the Glenfiddich® Artists in Residence program provides a unique opportunity for artists to work in an international community, share in a dialogue with other artists, and foster cross-disciplinary ideas.
“The ethos is about encouraging people to take inspiration from their experience living at the distillery,” says programme curator Andy Fairgrieve, “whether that be the pioneering and experimental heritage of Glenfiddich, the surrounding environment, or the daily life of the distillery and local community, and to respond as freely and creatively as possible.”
The Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation describes the program as having “established a reputation for producing radical contemporary art in the normally traditional surroundings of the Scotch whisky industry.”
The 2024 prize winner, Moncton artist Julie Forgues, recalls “inspiring walks on the distillery grounds with my orange security vest, the faint smell of whisky lingering in the air as I take my morning coffee outside on the terrace,” and “Rose Cottage, a comfortable, cozy and very spacious space that I’ve come to call ‘home’, with a wonderful studio space to be able to work, think, and discover.”
The Glenfiddich® Artists in Residence Prize includes private accommodation in these croft cottages (traditional small Scottish farm houses), as well as airfare, and a generous salary for the three-month stay. Additionally, the prize includes a substantial budget for materials, enabling artists to produce an ambitious new body of work.
Forgues – currently still in Dufftown after extending her stay – summarizes her experience last summer in Scotland as “extremely inspiring, and utmost heartwarming.”
To be considered for the prize, artists are invited to complete an application that includes a project proposal, curriculum vitae, short artist statement, and between five and fifteen images (or a short video). Completed applications must be submitted via Airtable by January 31, 2025, at 11:59 pm EST.
Each year the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program receives over two-hundred applications from artists across the country. A distinguished jury of artists and curators help produce a short list of the most promising applications, from which program curator Andy Fairgrieve ultimately selects the winner. The 2025 jury includes David Diviney, Ruth Burns, Ivan Jurakic, Joshua Schwebel, Stefan Hancherow and Eunice Luk.
The Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program has hosted over a hundred and sixty artists from countries such as Australia, Chile, China, Finland, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland, Scotland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, the UK, the US, and Canada, since its inception in 2002. This will be the 19th consecutive year that the program has sponsored a Canadian artist.
Past winners from Canada include Daniel Barrow, Helen Cho, Lee Henderson, Marla Hlady & Christof Migone, Eleanor King, Dean Baldwin Lew, Derek Liddington, Myfanwy Macleod, Vanessa Maltese, Damian Moppett, Annie Pootoogook, Jon Sasaki, Jillian Mcdonald, Damian Moppett, Arabella Campbell, Rhonda Weppler & Trevor Mahovsky and Dave Dyment, who subsequently administers the jury process.
“There are absolutely no restrictions as to the type of works an artist might produce during their time in Dufftown,” says Dyment. “To date, Canadian artists have produced drawings, paintings, sculptures, sound art, conceptual art, animation, installations, performance, photography and film works.”
Applicant submissions are accepted from December 6, 2024, until January 31, 2025, at 11:59 pm EST. Visit Airtable to submit your application.
The winning Canadian artist will be announced in April 2025.
