Propeller Art Gallery is seeking artwork in all mediums for our Call for Works based on the theme of Heart, Mind, Love. See details and conditions on the Submission page. This non-juried exhibition will be presented at the gallery from January 22 to February 9.

We are told that when Aleut/Innu Elders speak of the heart they do not necessarily mean feelings, but a deep portal of profound interconnectedness and awareness that exists between humans and all living things.

Historically, Western cultures have regarded the heart and mind as distinct, as emotion and reason, acknowledging the pull between the two.

In many Eastern cultures, the heart and mind are seen to work together as heart-mind, which is an important source of compassion and wisdom. It is the place of both suffering and confusion but also of ‘awakening’.

Words for “Heart” have Indo-European roots. The Sanskrit Hridaya has aural resonance with “heorte” (Old English), and “heart” in modern English. “Kardia”, from Greek, gives us “cardio”. “Cor”, the Latin for heart, “core”, “coeur” in French, and the Spanish “corazon”.

In scientific terms, the heart is a pump responsible for beating every second and oxygenating our organs. The mind is a complex network of millions of neural circuits that regulate all body functions. Together heart and mind control the feelings and emotions associated with love, by mechanisms that remain enigmatic.

Today, the heart’s symbolism thrives in Valentine’s Day celebrations, heart icons, and emojis, casually shared from devices every moment.

The topic offers a wealth of possibilities for expression. Classical concepts can be embraced or subverted or further interpreted creatively.

We invite you to join Propeller members in exploring the theme Heart, Mind, Love, and celebrating it together.

Artists Empowering Artists

Propeller Art Gallery is an artist-run co-operative and exhibition space in Toronto’s Queen West Art + Design District that supports innovative, sustainable programming.

Propeller was established in August 1996 by a small group of recent graduates from Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD). Their mission was to create an affordable community art gallery for emerging Canadian artists, offering a professional exhibition venue and necessary support in career building.

Propeller continues to uphold this today, supporting artists from emerging to established, through a dynamic approach to arts programming, a venue to exhibit art, and education through member-assisted learning and collaboration.
