Montreal based visual artist Roxane Fiore draws in chalk pastels, creating works that are inspired by her paper assemblages. In her upcoming exhibition All That We Are, at ARTSPLACE Gallery (November 2 – December 20, 2024), the artist delves into the mechanics of human perception, exploring the numerous cognitive biases that shape—and sometimes distort—our understanding of the world around us.
Fiore creates paper assemblages by cutting and tearing images from magazines, books and newspapers she collects. Selected for their aesthetic value as well as their ambiguity, these familiar-looking image fragments are then juxtaposed and superimposed in a process guided in part by chance.
“The spontaneity and freedom of this working method gives birth to more or less complex assemblages, which present a sublimated version of the world. I fabricate illusory spaces that move away from their original context, questioning the very ideas of reality and existence,” says Fiore.
“The small maquettes drawn in chalk pastels become large-scale representations of the initial paper objects. Through this trompe-l’oeil effect, Roxane creates meditative spaces where observation and introspection are encouraged,” explains Sophie Paskins, ARTSPLACE Gallery Director.
The artist’s research focuses on the phenomenon of “pareidolia”—the brain’s tendency to recognize familiar shapes and patterns in abstract or random compositions based on memory. The themes at the core of this exhibition address human identity.
“Appearances, often deceptive, invite viewers to look beyond initial impressions to uncover the multiple layers of meaning hidden within each piece,” adds Ted Lind, ARTSPLACE Board Member.
Fiore’s works investigate the nature of perceptual errors and illusions through a unique visual language that deliberately blurs the boundaries between abstraction and figuration.
“The deconstruction and reconstruction inherent in my process allow me to play with paradoxes, navigating between logic and illogic, comfort and discomfort, natural and artificial, reality and fiction,” Fiore explains.
“This dynamic exhibition serves as a mirror to the processes of human thought, questioning how we construct our reality from fragments of visual information by emphasizing the interplay between perception and interpretation,” concludes Lind.
Roxane Fiore’s All That We Are opening reception is Saturday, November 2, 2024, 12 – 2pm with artist talk at 1pm. Light refreshments served, all welcome. All That We Are continues through December 20. This exhibition is supported through Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Canada Council for the Arts.
