Part-time Professor, Design 3, Sheridan College

Sheridan is looking for an outstanding individual to join our faculty to teach our Design 3 course, in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. Sheridan seeks a part-time professor to teach a two-semester section of Design 3 (FAS346Y) on Mondays from 2-5pm and 6-9pm (six hours each week) over the thirteen-week fall session, September 3, 2024, through to December 3, 2024, and the thirteen-week winter session January 6, 2025, through to April 4, 2025.

In FAS346Y: Students develop the skills necessary to create art and design projects. Students create full or partial design mock-ups and schematic design presentations, work in teams, and submit proposals to design competitions within the school in response to a client brief. Students explore contemporary art and design via simulated workplace assignments, visual presentation, discussion and critique.

Design 3 is an elective course that focuses on real-world design projects through a simulated design studio atmosphere. Students learn to apply the conceptual and technical skills developed in Design 2 FAS246H to a variety of projects and build a design portfolio.

Art and Art History, a collaborative program between Sheridan and the University of Toronto at Mississauga, offers a 4-year Major or Specialist Honours BA in studio and in art history. Interdisciplinary studios include: photography, painting, print media, design, drawing, and sculpture and installation. Art history offerings examine the history, production and reception of a range of visual and aural texts, including (but not limited to) photography, new media, popular culture, and advertising; painting, sculpture, architecture, and the built environment; contemporary art and museum culture; and time-based media, including film and television.

Sheridan faculty provide academic leadership to programs and courses within their areas of expertise and contribute to the creation of a learning-centred environment where students can develop to their full potential. They also contribute to College, School and program excellence by collaborating on a variety of initiatives such as new program development, applied research and alternative delivery strategies.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Ensuring that program and course curricula are current, relevant and reflective of best practices within the relevant professional/program disciplines;
  • Creating an effective environment for learning which accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and individual learning styles;
  • Designing appropriate strategies and tools for facilitating and assessing student learning;
  • Developing multi-media materials and alternative delivery strategies and incorporating appropriate educational technologies into the learning process;
  • At the third-year level, the incumbent will assist students in applying their skills in the Adobe Creative Suite: Illustrator (Ai), InDesign (Id), Photoshop (Ps), and After Effects (Ae), as well as Figma, to create a range of deliverables that demonstrate industry standards and their developing aesthetic style; The incumbent will help students synthesize and invent their own aesthetic, creative and communicative voice in a range of art and design media;
  • Ensuring that students are aware of course and program learning outcomes, learning strategies and evaluation techniques; provide individual tutoring and academic counselling; and evaluate student progress/achievement within assigned courses.

About You

You have the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion.

The successful candidate will also meet the following requirements:

  • Graphic designer with a minimum of 5 years practical experience in solo practice, a design studio, agency or as an in-house designer;
  • Experience with publication design, visual identity design, motion graphics (does not need to be extensive) and front-end web design;
  • Ability to teach Figma and After Effects;
  • Must be very comfortable with Adobe Creative Suite apps;
  • Must be comfortable teaching students of varying levels of experience and be excited to move them along their design/art path;
  • Demonstrate an ability to teach graphic design history and practice within a fine-art context at the third-year level;
  • Has an informed view of contemporary design practices, issues and criticism; a pluralistic approach to contemporary art is also preferred;
  • Strong network of contacts with other professionals, designers, employers;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Committed to excellence in teaching and learning and to working within a team environment;
  • Knowledge of industry specific software, practices, and standards;
  • MFA preferred;
  • Experience in teaching at the post-secondary level preferred.

  • A list of images, video and sound files that you are submitting. Digital image files must be numbered and titled and correspond to the support material list (e.g. 01.title.jpg). For each artwork on the list, include date, title, medium and dimensions (height x width, specify in. or cm).
  • Current resume and a letter briefly outlining your experience, qualifications and teaching philosophy in relation to design as either a PDF or MS Word attachment no later than August 8, 2024.
